Welcome
New here? We’re really glad you came.
Trying a church for the first time — or the first time in a long time — can feel a bit intimidating. We get that. Here’s everything you might be wondering about, so you can arrive feeling at ease.
The short version
Sundays at 10:30 am, about an hour, come as you are.
Whether you’ve been part of church your whole life or you’re just curious, you are truly welcome here. If you’d rather check things out from home first, you can watch a livestream — or come join us in person.

What to expect
What happens on a Sunday?
Our gatherings are relaxed and friendly. You don’t need to know when to stand, sit, or say anything — we’ll guide you, and you can simply observe if you prefer.
A welcoming, informal atmosphere
Come as you are — there’s no dress code and no test at the door.
Music
A mix of organ, piano, and sometimes handbells, with hymns old and new.
Readings and reflection
A few short readings from the Bible, prayers, and quiet moments.
A message for everyday life
A reflection (sometimes called a “sermon”) connecting faith with the week ahead.
Community and connection
Updates, chances to get involved, and space to share joys or concerns — only if you’d like.
Coffee and conversation after
The easiest way to meet people. Stay for five minutes or forty-five.

Accessibility
We are working to make our space as welcoming as possible:
- A lift (elevator) is located to the right of the main entrance

- Large-print service guides are available
Our building is older, so accessibility isn’t perfect yet — but we are committed to improving it so everyone can feel comfortable here. If there’s something that would help you, let us know.
Families
Children are always welcome
Wiggles, noises, and questions included.
-
All-ages time
A short moment in every service just for kids.

The Shepherd’s Den
A quiet “busy space” right in the sanctuary if little ones need to move around — you can still see and hear the service.

No pressure
Kids can take part, or just be. Same goes for grown-ups.
Good to know
Questions people actually ask
Do I have to participate in anything?
No. You’re never required to take part in anything — just being present is enough. You can sing along or listen, join in prayers or sit quietly, and simply stay seated during anything that isn’t for you.
What’s communion? Will I be expected to join in?
About four times a year we share a simple ritual where people come forward to receive a piece of bread and dip it in grape juice, remembering the meal Jesus shared with his friends. It’s open to everyone — you’re welcome to participate or simply stay seated.
What are baptisms and confirmations?
From time to time we celebrate milestones: baptisms welcome someone (of any age) into the church community, and confirmations are when someone chooses to affirm their faith for themselves. They’re joyful moments — and as a visitor, you just get to enjoy them.
I don’t know what I believe. Is that a problem?
Not at all. You don’t need to be a member — or even sure what you believe. Come for a visit, ask questions if you want to, stay for coffee. Getting connected can happen at your own pace. If you’re curious what grounds this community, read what we believe.
Is Highlands really welcoming to LGBTQ+ people?
Yes — warmly and intentionally. We welcome people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, family structures, abilities, and cultures, and we are in the process of becoming an officially Affirming congregation within the United Church of Canada. Whoever you are, you belong here.
How do I get connected beyond Sundays?
At your own pace. When you’re ready, there are music groups, learning circles, and fellowship events, plus outreach work you can join. Or just introduce yourself at coffee hour — we’d love to meet you.
Take your time.
There’s no pressure to sign up, join, or believe anything right away. Come for a visit. Ask questions if you want to. Stay for coffee.
